Simulating basin-scale linkages of the food-energy-water nexus with reduced complexity modeling

چکیده
There is a rapidly growing need to communicate the public and policymakers on nature impact of climate change its associated extremes, which manifest themselves across essential Food-Energy-Water Systems (FEWS). The complexity this nexus demands analytical tools that can capture essence FEWS with system, may be difficult stage implement from computationally efficient point-of-view. Reduced Complexity Models (RCMs) synthesize important facets system quickly less dependence difficult-to-assign inputs. We report development an RCM framework for nexus, serve as basic research tool in facilitating parameter sensitivity experiments well means establish more insightful dialogue stakeholders through joint scenario construction. Three stand-alone coupled models at basin scale have been configured using Stella Architect software simulate: 1) major flows storage water, 2) power plant operations subsequent impacts river reaches; 3) nitrogen (N) mobilization transport atmospheric landmass sources riverine receiving waters. Delaware River Basin chosen contemporary simulation test case. Modeled results are calibrated validated observed stream gauge data, indicating reliable model performance monthly annual time steps (0.57 < NSE 0.98). A set single multi-factor climate, technology, policy then explored framework. Basin-scale sensitivities investigated intensified revealing crucial roles sewage treatment energy infrastructure resilience, significant exacerbations mitigations thermal N pollution under opposing tradeoffs between temperature electricity production technology scenarios.

The food-energy-water nexus: A framework for sustainable development modeling
Energy, water, and food are facing present and future challenges triggered by climate change, population growth, human behavior, and economics. Management strategies for energy, water, and food are possible through policies, technology, and related education. However, the links between resources (energy, water, and food) and impacting factors (population increase, human behavior, economics, and...
متن کاملThe nexus of food, energy, and water.
The Earth's population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050, posing significant challenges in meeting human needs while minimally affecting the environment. To support this population, we will need secure and safe sources of food, energy, and water. The nexus of food, energy, and water is one of the most complex, yet critical, issues that face society. There is no more land to exploit, and t...

Population growth, growing scarcity of freshwater resources and food security have convinced all operators that spending large sums of money on cross-cutting responses to water, energy and food needs, especially in the face of climate change and global warming, is unreasonable.According to the latest classification of the International Geographical Organization, Iran is located in the category ...
متن کاملWater-Energy-Food Nexus in a Transboundary River Basin: The Case of Tonle Sap Lake, Mekong River Basin
The water-energy-food nexus is promoted as a new approach for research and policy-making. But what does the nexus mean in practice and what kinds of benefits does it bring? In this article we share our experiences with using a nexus approach in Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake area. We conclude that water, energy and food security are very closely linked, both in the Tonle Sap and in the transboundary...
